New grant announced to support EV charging in Wales

Schools, colleges and councils across Wales are being urged to apply for new grant funding to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure on their sites.
The Welsh Government invested £13 million on its Zero emission vehicle and electric vehicle charging infrastructure (ZEV and EVCI) grant in 2025 and has just opened applications for the 2026 fund.
Renewable energy electrical specialist Joe Collison said the latest grants, open to public sector organisations, would fund up to 90 per cent of infrastructure costs for fleet-focused projects.
He said: “The new announcement forms part of the Welsh Governments ambition to achieve a net zero public sector by 2030 – as they look to remove the barrier of upfront costs that can sometimes come with going electric.
“Eligible organisations include local authorities, health boards and NHS bodies, fire and rescue services, national park authorities, Welsh Government sponsored bodies, universities and further education colleges.”
Joe heads up Shropshire-based renewable energy specialist CES, which recently delivered a project installing solar PV powering EV charging for a DAF commercial fleet depot.
He added: “This is a major step forward in making the transition to a more sustainable and electric fleet.
“These grants help to remove the barrier facing some organisations and those who have been considering electrifying their fleet should take full advantage of the opportunity while the funding is there.
“We have seen successful funding programmes elsewhere in the UK including for private sector organisations and there has been an increase in demand from businesses looking to move to an electric fleet and develop the infrastructure needed.”

- Grant supports purchase of zero-emission vehicles, including vans, HGVs, minibuses, utility vehicles and specialist response vehicles.
- Funding is available for IVCI intended primarily for fleet use.
- Scheme supports energy storage systems where they are directly linked to EV charging infrastructure.
- Government will fund up to 90 per cent of eligible charging infrastructure and energy store costs.
- Fixed payments available where cost difference of zero emission vehicle compared with internal combustion engine (ICE) is small.
- Funding can also be used for charging points, grid connection upgrades, site electrical works and one year of back office software costs.
Not eligible
- Cars, hybrid vehicles, waste collection vehicles, contract hire vehicles
