A newly launched organisation bringing together major businesses to tackle net zero could be the catalyst for UK SMEs to transition to clean energy. The Net Zero Council, which brings together businesses, Government and the design sector, aims to create practical pathways for businesses to cut carbon emissions while boosting economic growth.
CES director Joe Collison said a focus on supporting SMEs to decarbonise is exactly what British business needs right now.
Through our work delivering large-scale renewable schemes across the UK, we see daily how manufacturers and commercial organisations are ready to make the switch to clean energy but need clear pathways and support to make it happen. This coordinated approach could be the catalyst many businesses have been waiting for.
Under the joint leadership of energy secretary Ed Miliband and Co-operative Group chief executive Shirine Khoury-Haq, the council will develop roadmaps for different sectors and create tools to help smaller businesses navigate their journey to net zero.
Members include representatives from Siemens, Nestle, HSBC and Aviva Investors, alongside experts from the Trades Union Congress and Design Council. Shropshire-based CES, which evolved from Collison Electrical Services, has established itself as a specialist in commercial renewable energy solutions, delivering projects from Scotland to the Midlands.
The company’s expertise spans solar installations, battery storage systems and off- grid renewable technologies for industrial and commercial facilities. The council’s work will be supported by a new delivery group, ensuring its initiatives reach businesses of all sizes across the UK.
